The Problem with Artificial Christmas Trees.

27th February 2020

What’s wrong with artificial Christmas trees? Plenty! There are many reasons why it’s time to say farewell to fake.

Why Buy Real?

Carbon Footprint

More than 85% of artificial Christmas trees are plastic and imported from China. The carbon footprint of an average 2 metre plastic tree is twice that of a real Christmas tree. This is due to the carbon-intensive oils used to make the PVC plastic needed to produce artificial trees. By choosing a home-grown, real Christmas tree, customers can support their local community and reduce their carbon footprint. When it comes to being green, a real Christmas tree wins every time.

Hazardous Materials

When placed near a heat source, PVC can be potentially hazardous in itself. But it’s the lead used during the production process that can be most harmful to those working in the factories where fake Christmas trees are made. The lead content of artificial trees made in China is high enough to require a warning label.

Lead Content

Studies have revealed that a percentage of artificial Christmas trees contained lead contents high enough to pose a significant health risk in the home, especially to young children. Always check the label and consult the manufacturer if you have concerns about your artificial tree.

Working conditions

Over 60% of the world’s Christmas decorations are produced by 600 factories in Yiwu, China. Factory staff is made up predominantly of migrant workers, typically working 12-hour shifts and earning the equivalent of only £200 to £300 per month, according to The Guardian – something to think about.

Fire Retardancy

Whilst artificial trees require flame retardant treatment, they remain more flammable than their real life counterparts. Real trees should be kept for a maximum of four weeks and watered regularly to maintain their moisture content. Dust which is inevitably collected during storage of fake trees is extremely flammable and pre-lit trees are also susceptible.
